Blond Catharsis

Tales of a tall blond boy who eats his heart out. Writer, optimist, cathartic artist.
My brother asked me to sketch a tattoo idea for him, in honor of our father, who passed away from brain cancer a little over a year ago. After he got sick, he always used to say, “Don’t count the days, make the days count.” My brother asked me to make a design using those words, the grey brain cancer, and the dates of birth and passing. Here’s what I came up with.
Miss you Dad.

Putting my art degree to good use. Note: I did not draw California, just the dumb word art on the side. And the fried egg dude. (at Homeroom)

I drew this comic a couple years ago about how I came out of the closet and nobody in the history of time was surprised. (I know it’s not the best quality but get over it)

Okay, so maybe I won’t complete the 30 Days of Art Improvement Challenge in 30 Days. BUT I WILL COMPLETE IT. SOME DAY.

Day 4: Draw a part of the human anatomy you have trouble with. x20, with atleast 5 being skeletal/musculature studies.

(I did the torso)

(In case you couldn’t tell)

Day 3: Draw a figure that’s in action, using a reference - link to reference

Same story as yesterday. One quick sketch, one line study. I decided it’d be fun to use Olympic athletes in light of, well, the Olympics.

Day 2: Draw a figure using a reference - link to reference

I wanted to do a quick and messy drawing, but I also wanted practice doing a contour-like exercise with careful single lines.

Here goes! The 30 Days of Art Improvement Challenge!
Day 1: Self-Portrait - Introduce Yourself
I wanted to draw a picture of me doing an unconventional face, and now some weird forced smile, and this was the result! I was really happy with it.

So, I’ve decided to jumpstart this lil’ guy. More writing, more art, and plus I want to incorporate a photographic element, because I feel like that can contribute both in autobiographical and artistic value.

So, pictures. And, this 30 Days of Art Improvement Challenge. Coming your way. Get ready.

Part of this inspiration comes from a huge trip I just took to the Pacific Northwest by myself. Almost three weeks of introspection and solitude, and it felt incredible. I feel ready to make my art.

Picking Up the Pieces

I lay there in the dark on my back in my bed, and soft music whispered in my ears.

I closed my eyes and I placed my hands upon my chest. My heart was still beating.

I could feel the muscle flex from right to left, throbbing to its own organic rhythm.

I thought it felt stronger, striking hard against my sternum with renewed strength.

That’s when I knew again that I still was. That I still am. A feeling I had forgotten.

The feeling of your heart against your ribcage and knowing that you’re alive.

And I thought of all the times when it felt like my heart might stop.

When it felt like someone was squeezing it and wouldn’t let go.

I turned off the music, and still the beat persisted.

That’s when I knew I’d be okay.

I started this drawing over a year ago and randomly decided to finish it. It was all about finding the line between my aloneness and my loneliness. Different times…

I love going to the beach. It helps me think.
